   The legislation says patients can use marijuana if they get a doctor’s recommendation, yet I see most of the people who show up at these hearings don’t have one. If you’re going to show up to testify for a bill that would require a doctor’s approval, it only makes sense that you should have a doctor’s note with you when you testify. It looks highly suspicious when a legalization advocates show up talking about access without a medical professional involved. Those people should be working on a bill for legalization, if that’s what they really want. Piggybacking those efforts at legaliation on the backs of medical patients is not going to gain any support for medical use or legalization, but it makes the issue look like a joke.

      yo Carl, not many dr.s in Iowa are illegaly recommending mmj use without the laws in place to protect them ,we can’t put the egg before the chicken,in my experience most mj users are self medicating for some ailment or another ,I understand your discouragement with trying to motivate these heads but try not to get so high that you have to look down on others

         I know that patients are self medicating, but that’s legalization, not medical use. You can’t mix the two. Medical use means a doctor. You at least need to prove you have a qualifying condition. I see people who come to these hearings without any written documentation of any medical condition. Those people might as well argue for legalization. People who have serious medical conditions have medical records to prove it. That is who we need leading this, not a bunch of counter-culture rhetoric.

   I am chemically dependant and have remained clean and sober for 22 years, so the use of any mind or mood altering drug is a serious topic for me. My son is 17 years and at the age of 15 was diagnosed with bipolar disorder along with attention deficit disorder. Up until recently, he was bombarded with a remarkable regimen of pharmaceuticals. My son began to suffer of insomnia which led him to incredible manic episodes and eventually to experimentation of street drugs.
   With the exception of marijuana, my son admitted proved disastrous; however, marijuana actually helped him to calm himself and made it easier to sleep. For the last month, my wife and I have been giving controlled dosages in the evening to relax him and help him sleep. Because he is now sleeping at night, he has stopped taking sleeping pills, reduced his use of ADD meds to half, and requires only half the prescribed dose of Abilify. His manic and depressive episodes have now been greatly reduced and his grades have dramatically improved
   I know I’m breaking the law, but there is nothing I won’t do for my son.

      Your comment just made me tear up. I have bipolar as well. Please be safe and don’t incriminate yourself unnecessarily…be safe.

   I am very interested in getting involved but have no idea where to start. It amazes me the arguments against legalization are that it’s highly addictive and shows no medical value. There are people willing to testify to the medical values of it. Not only that but it’s free choice. Please tell me that cigarettes and alcohol aren’t highly addictive and show medical value yet people CHOOSE to use them all the time.. I will do whatever it takes to help in this cause and I know other people willing to get involved if we knew where to start/what to do.. please let me know what I can do to help you
