Iowa Senate Resolution Calls for Legislative Study on Medical Cannabis — Not To Be Completed Until After November Elections?

From today’s Des Moines Register:

“Five Republicans and five Democrats co-signed Senate Resolution 112, which seeks an examination on establishing a medical use of cannabis program in Iowa.

“I am optimistic that this study will be approved. I think there is support for it in both the House and the Senate,” said Sen. Joe Bolkcom, D-Iowa City, a strong proponent of medical marijuana. He said its likely the study committee would conduct its work after the November election.” –Full article here

Last week, Senator Mark Chelgren called for a vote on the floor of the Iowa Senate: "Do we trust the Board of Medicine, do we trust our physicians, to do what’s in the best interest of our patients? I also would encourage the majority party to put forward a bill that would allow us to vote, with an up or down vote, on medical cannabis. " -- Senator Mark Chelgren (R -- Ottumwa)

Fantastic change in rhetoric from our duly appointed leader after last weeks antagonistic rant against Governor Branstad on the floor of the Iowa Senate. Lawmakers seem to be moving this issue forward — four long years after the Board of Pharmacy unanimously recommended a medical cannabis program be set up.

Back in 2010, politicians concerned with election year politics did their best to avoid taking any meaningful action on medical cannabis — is this now happening again? While a bipartisan resolution is a great step forward, real action by the Iowa Legislature is long overdue. Senator Mark Chelgren said last week that a vote on the floor of the Iowa Senate should take place this session. I agree.
