The Cedar Rapids Police Department will be participating in a Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – Regional 420 Enforcement project from April 20th through April 22nd that focuses on drug-impaired driving.
With ever-increasing incidents of drug-impaired driving on our nation’s roadways, NHTSA and the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau put together a “Regional 420 Enforcement” mobilization. The term ‘420’ has become synonymous with drug use and that is why this enforcement project was planned for 4/20. The “Regional 420 Enforcement” aims to bring awareness and enforcement to the issue of drug-impaired driving across the region.
The Cedar Rapids Police Department will have additional officers on patrol this coming weekend to be on the lookout for impaired drivers. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and illegal drugs may cause impairment alone or in combination with each other and/or with alcohol. In NHTSA’s National Roadside Survey conducted in 2013-2014, nearly one in four drivers tested positive for at least one drug that could potentially affect safe driving skills.

Adam Gilbaugh If your using medical thc and still driving it’s still illegal. Still under the influence of a drug. And i think they mean they are going to be using basic test like looking at eyes, the smell, hand eye coordination. I don’t believe they mean actually test.
Eric Horton Folks up in Washington state have been dealing with this since legalization. Get in an accident, test positive, and now it’s s DUI even if the person hasn’t smoked in weeks.

Mike Howe I don’t know how often it happens but they actually will give you a OWI for drugs rather than alcohol here in Iowa. If the officer suspects strongly enough that the driver is on something they will ask for a blood or urine test back at the station after the standard road sobriety test. Refusal equals automatic charges. I witnessed it myself about 10 years ago.

Gene Merrifield I know from Expierence. IOWA relies on ua’s and if you drop dirty even if you haven’t smoked in week you are guilty of DUI ask any attorney.
