Corin Juehring Drugged At 515 Alive Music Festival In Des Moines — Public Service Announcement

This horrifying story as told by the victim should be utilized to educate people on drug use and etiquette at festivals and other locations since 1, people will use drugs and 2, other people will give harmful drugs to people without their consent thus 3, drug use education, like sex education, needs to evolve from “Just Say No” abstinence-only ignorance.

Here’s an email sent to KCCI as well as the post from Corin Juehring that has circulated around social media today.

As soon as I called KCCI and asked if this was news worthy they said “yes, email immediately.”

So I went to 515 Alive on Saturday in Des Moines. It was an awesome time. Great shows. Amazing people. All in all a fantastic night. However, at the end when everyone started clearing out, my phone had died and I didn’t have the keys to my car because my fiance had the back pack (we had split up hanging out with different people, totally normal, figured we’d catch up when we were both ready). Well long story short, I was walking around different crowds looking for him and a group of people asked me if I was alright. They seemed super nice, one of the girls gave me a cigarette and we talked a bit while I explained my situation. As they were leaving, they offered me a water. Without even thinking, I took it and we parted ways. 2 drinks of water and a short walk to my car later, I realized I FUCKED UP. They roofied it. I couldn’t stand up. Could barely keep my eyes open. (And no I hadn’t had a drop to drink, besides water, I was the DD, so I was not intoxicated at all) Still locked out of my car. Phone still dead. Luckily a nice gentleman let me borrow his phone so I could text my fiance where I was and that something wasn’t right. I ended up passed out on the windshield. It only took him about 10 min to find me, but it felt like forever. He made it back just in time to hold my hair while (thankfully) I threw up most of the water I drank. I handed the bottle in to the paramedics and explained what happened and told them I didn’t want to just throw it away in case someone else got ahold of it. They checked me out a bit and told me I should be fine after I slept it off (since I did throw most of it up).

Moral of the story, DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING FROM STRANGERS. No matter how normal they seem. No matter how nice they are. No matter what anyone offers you, do yourself a favor and say no. I NEVER thought something like this would happen to me. But it did. It was terrifying. I got lucky. I could have ended up in the back of someone’s car and not even known it. I could have been abducted. Raped. Or maybe even worse. I felt so dumb afterwards. I know better and IT STILL HAPPENED TO ME. So to all my friends and everyone else who gets the chance to read this, BE CAREFUL. REMEMBER TO THINK BEFORE YOU ACT. DON’T TAKE THINGS FROM ANYONE YOU DON’T KNOW. And most importantly, have a back up plan for if you get separated from who you came with. Have extra supplies. Extra water. Make sure your phone is charged. Be safe while having fun. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone, and I’m sure it happens more often they we all think.

Here’s my email to KCCI. Calling Channel 5 next:

Hi,

My name is Jason Karimi. I am an activist with NORML and Iowa Patients for Medical Marijuana for ten years in Iowa and would like to respectfully request urgent warnings to Iowans so this does not happen again. Talking with Corin it appears she accepted food from a stranger. I’m very unhappy about this entire situation. While an organization to prevent overdoses or druggings was on site by the name of Dance Safe the outreach was not enough and may have been restricted by Des Moines PD contributing to this potential sexual assault or worse. Please consider Corin’s warning so we can address this directly during next year’s festivals and hold organizers feet to the fire as well as local officials.

Thank you!

Jason Karimi

Executive Director, Iowa Patients for Medical Marijuana
