Would you vote to expand Iowa’s current medical cannabis law? Legalize marijuana?

Yes, expand the current medical cannabis law to remove the THC cap and allow for whole-plant medicine. I also support legalizing recreational cannabis with state regulation and taxation. Alcohol and tobacco use are the No. 1 and No. 3 preventable causes of death in the U.S. and yet both of these are legal and regulated. Cannabis is a proven safer alternative to opiates and many other prescription and over-the-counter medications. For me, it comes down to freedom and compassion. Legalize, regulate, tax.

I do not see any legitimate reason to keep marijuana illegal, but it is a decision that should be left to the federal government. If the bill came before me, I would vote to legalize marijuana, but it is not something that I will fight for. Nobody should be imprisoned just for smoking marijuana.

I’ve heard from Iowa patients and my own mother-in-law on this issue, and it’s clear that the current law doesn’t help patients enough. We need to increase the number of diseases that can be treated by medical marijuana and increase the THC level per dosage to optimize the potency and effectiveness. I would support the legalization of marijuana.

I would support expanding the medical marijuana law. There are indications that legalizing marijuana for recreational use has a substantial cost in problems such as driving under the influence and health effects. That information may not be conclusive, but, based on what I know right now I would not support legalizing recreational use.

As a Marine Corps Veteran, I have many close friends with a diverse amount of medical issues – both physical and mental. I have seen firsthand these friends prescribed medical cannabis in other states for mental health injuries incurred on the battlefield, only to have their physician-approved medicine be taken away when they move to Iowa. These experiences have convinced me that medical marijuana needs to be legalized.

Iowa’s current law on medical cannabis isn’t working. Expand the law to manufacture non-intoxicating cannabis oil for those who suffer from debilitating diseases and other medical conditions, like terminal cancers, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. The THC level should be raised to make it more effective. These decisions should be made with the input of medical professionals.

Our current medical cannabis law is not working. I support expanding the law to allow cannabis oil for those who suffer debilitating illnesses like terminal cancer, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy by adding to the list of eligible diseases and by raising the THC level, making the medication effective. Legalizing marijuana is something I would consider in Iowa’s future but not until reviewing the outcomes in other states where it is currently legal and studying credible research from medical professionals.

Expand. Definitely expand on the medical cannabis law. However, before expanding I would strike the section that has to do with felons not being allowed access to medical cannabis. Republicans and Democrats alike have passed this bill, but yet are excluding people that have paid their debt to society. These people will or already need access to this and now they are saying no to certain people. I would be for legalizing marijuana and utilizing the tax revenue for our schools (K-12 and colleges).

I am the mother of three children. If they were in any sort of pain I would want to do anything for them, and I know there are parents all across the state who feel the same. There are still a lot of questions about the benefits this can have for those who need it, but I believe we owe it to our family, friends and neighbors to look into all the options we have to provide our loved ones with what they need to live happy, healthy lives. I do not support recreational use of marijuana.

Patients who face debilitating health conditions should have the opportunity to use medical cannabis with the approval of a health professional. I have been persuaded by parents of children who have epilepsy and others who want this opportunity. I don’t currently favor legalization, but I do favor reducing criminal penalties and treating marijuana use as a public health issue. I strongly opposed Republicans’ $2.5 million cut to substance abuse treatment – a real health and safety problem.

Yes. The tinkering around the edges that the Legislature has done in the late night hours of the final two legislative sessions serves no good purpose. We need to expand the content of the chemical that soothes the person and expand access under reasonable rules. This is a bipartisan issues that we should be able to succeed with. Yes, I would expand our current law. The cannabis THC levels need to be increased so patients are able to use the oils appropriately. Currently the law is extremely restrictive and makes it difficult for the patients and families who need the medication. I would also like to see more locations available for the manufacturing of medical cannabis in Iowa. I support decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Iowa is behind the curve on cannabis legislation due to Republican legislators and their irrationally based fear of the devil’s lettuce. My vote would be to gut our current legislation, making it more comprehensive. This includes adding medical conditions, whole-plant access, the ability for patients to grow their own plants, civil protections from the law for doctors and patients, and affordability. Medical freedom doesn’t exist if we aren’t allowed to treat our afflictions how we each see fit.

We should expand Iowa’s current medical cannabis law. My mother, Terry, suffers from multiple sclerosis, a chronic disease for which cannabis could provide significant relief. Our current law is so strict as to be ineffectual, so I believe it should be expanded. For recreational cannabis, though the medical research is clear that cannabis is no more dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes, I would carefully explore the impact of legalization with input from all stakeholders including law enforcement.

Yes, The current law is the worst in the country. It gives false hope to suffering Iowans. We need to do three things in 2019: One, we need to allow access to the therapeutic benefits of the entire cannabis plant; two, expand the medical conditions that are covered under the program; and three, expand the number of locations where people can access this medicine. The Republicans in control of the Iowa House have blocked sensible policy. They need to go if this program is going to be fixed.

Iowa’s current medical cannabis law is not working for our citizens who suffer from debilitating illnesses like terminal cancer, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. I would support expanding the law to allow for production of non-intoxicating cannabis oil and would leave medical professionals in consultation with their patients in charge of making health care and prescription decisions. A politician in Des Moines can and should not determine an individual’s health care decisions.

I would like to see how other states are using medical cannabis to help their citizens and take those lessons to help make our state better and more proactive. There is no reason that our citizens should be looking to move to other states for medical treatments because they can obtain cannabis for pain, seizures, Parkinson’s or numerous other medical conditions.

Yes. The law passed by the Legislature is not working to benefit those Iowans suffering from several debilitating illnesses. More diseases could be added to this list and availability of the medical form of cannabis oil should be reviewed by medical professionals. They are the ones who should oversee the treatment of Iowans and their access to medical cannabis. It should be a form of treatment for Iowans, not a challenge. I do not support the legalization of recreational cannabis at this time.

I supported bipartisan expansion of medical cannabis laws. We created a cannabidiol board to recommend what diseases cannabis should be used to treat and what level of THC should be used. They’d make suggestions to the Board of Medicine for final approval/denial. I think this process guarantees we don’t go too far too fast with the program. I look forward to hearing recommendations from the board, so we can make sure we continue with a program that helps sick Iowans get treatment they need.

While a step in the right direction, Iowa’s current medical cannabis law can be improved upon. I could support full legalization if Iowa decided to regulate and tax in a positive manner.

All medicine, natural or pharmaceutical, should be researched to ensure the benefits outweigh any risks. I would support any bill that would allow for more medical or recreational use of marijuana. Full legalization would be ideal, I personally have never tried it and would be unlikely to do so if legalized, but I do not believe that is a choice I should make for others. We are facing overcapacity issues in the future with our prison systems, and we do not have the funds to build more of them.

We just recently expanded the state’s medical cannabis law and the new program isn’t even up and running quite yet. This new program has entrusted medical professionals with the power to determine what conditions should be included, dosage levels, etc. We need to wait and see how this new program actually works before we go making dramatic changes to it.

I do not support legalizing marijuana for recreational use. There are too many negative and unintended consequences.

I am supportive of expanding the medical cannabis law. It has been proven by the medical profession that the use of cannabis oil does relieve symptoms for many different diseases. I am on the fence regarding legalizing recreational marijuana. My work with persons with mental health and substance abuse issues, I have seen too many individuals with drug addictions who started out experimenting with marijuana and moved on to using more addictive drugs. I am more than willing to be at the table for a discussion though.

Would you vote to expand Iowa’s current medical cannabis law?

The 2017 legislature passed a bill to improve access to cannabidiol (non-intoxicating medicinal oil) and establish a Medical Cannabidiol Board to establish policies and procedures regarding sale and use of CBD. It would make sense to have the Board study the issue and make a recommendation regarding changing CBD access and legalization of marijuana. The Iowa Legislature should not be in the business of practicing medicine. Legalize marijuana? I would listen to the recommendation of the Board as well as the federal government’s current policy regarding marijuana production, sale, and banking practices. These factors would determine my vote on expansion of CBD and cannabis use.
