Below is a letter from a supporter and ally. Here’s some quick clarifications.
STOP THE CONFUSION. The Department of Health is the one who decides whether you use cannabis. Your doctor does not have that duty nor authority. His only duty is to advise the state a basic YES/NO answer: Does the patient have a certain condition?
So when you go to your doctor’s appointment, don’t do this:
“I need pot doc.”
Doc: “That’s illegal.”
You’ll lose unless the doctor knows what he’s talking about, and most don’t want educated without cover from legal counsel and prefer to remain ignorant so they can’t be held liable and sued for malpractice.
Do this instead:
“Doc, I need you to sign here certifying that I have this qualifying condition on an application to the State of Iowa.”
If he says no, state:

“The medical marijuana application only requires you to certify I have this illness. Iowa is not violating federal law unlike other states and you are in no way at risk if you sign this. Unless you have a problem with my health suffering from state approved CBD extracts that are fully legal under state and federal law you need to answer whether or not I have this question with a signature here.”
Without trying to push buttons without cause here, IF your doctor STILL refuses, you MAY write to us at jahkingdomcome23@gmail.com to share your story.
Please stay safe out there and be polite and courteous as usual. Follow WeedPress on Facebook for more updates as we enter the final 30 day countdown before Iowans have access to cannabis for medicine.
Here’s the letter from an anonymous supporter:
Dr Michalak is a GI doctor. Crohn’s Disease is a qualifying condition. Also remember the untreatable pain is a qualifying condition. ( means any pain who’s caused cannot be removed and according to General accepted Medical Practice the full range of management modalities appropriate for the patient has been used without adequate result or with intolerable side effects) So that means you can get in to see him for any GI problem. And ask for the appointment to talk about your medications. You want a med review. If you already see a GI Dr and he is not cannabis friendly. Ask to see Dr M for a 2nd opinion in your case.
Don’t call and ask for an appointment for medical marijuana. Call and ask for help with reviewing your medications. Have your GI doctor send your records to Dr Michalak telling him that you do have Crohn’s disease or any other GI problem. Dr michalak is used to working with critically ill patients. You then can simply go in and tell him that the current medications you are taking are giving you intolerable side effects.
Intolerable side effects can mean constipation, vomiting, nausea, and confusion Right there you have a case to be qualified for the Iowa cannabidiol program because A. You have Crohn’s disease or B you have another GI issue that you take medications for that give you intolerable side effects . And ask him what he would recommend for you. Then you say I’ve heard of the cannabidiol program. Ask him what he thinks about it. Have your form with you. Have it all filled out and asked him to sign it. If I can’t a stress this enough. Don’t call and tell him you want a referral for medical marijuana. Make it seem like it is his idea. He probably won’t take an appointment with you if he knows the only reason you’re coming is for him to sign your form. Later I’m going to talk more about how PTSD, anxiety and depression can be a qualifying condition under the untreatable pain condition. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Desperate patients needing doctor referrals should quietly share this with those in the Sioux City area if seeking access to medical cannabis for any reason.
