IHRC is now accepting applications for new members for our Board of Directors. IHRC is growing, and so is our board. In particular, we are looking for individuals who are community organizers, experts in civil and human rights law, affordable housing specialists, leaders in communities of color, and accounting and administration wizards. Current board members hail from Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and rural Marion County – we welcome applicants from all four corners of our state.
Applications are welcomed from people of any age, gender identity, race, or ethnicity. We encourage applications from people who are living with HIV, hepatitis, disabilities, mental illness, or have a current / past history of drug use. Board members volunteer their time with IHRC, commit to a two year term, and attend bi-monthly meetings that are scheduled at times convenient to members. We welcome applications from individuals of all professional backgrounds and have no requirements regarding level of education, professional status, or financial contribution.
We recently welcomed two new members to IHRC’s Board of Directors. Read about new members Dr. Stephan Arndt and Deborah Krauss below.
Stephan Arndt, Ph.D. (Steve) is the former Director of the Iowa Consortium for Substance Abuse Research and Evaluation at the University of Iowa, serving in role from 2000 to 2018. He is currently a Professor of Psychiatry in the College of Medicine, Professor of Biostatistics in the College of Public Health, and also Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa. Steve is the Editor of the open-access journal, Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy and has published over 350 articles in professional journals. Dr. Arndt completed his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in Los Angeles in psychology and then received a masters and doctorate in psychology at the Claremont Graduate School. After receiving his Ph.D., he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in biostatistics at UCLA. Dr. Arndt has served on national, state, and local boards including the National Institute for Mental Health and the Iowa Department of Public Health (e.g., the State’s Epidemiological Workgroup), and the Drug Policy Advisory Committee for the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy. Through his work with the Consortium, he has been involved with many statewide projects, including SBIRT-Iowa funded by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), jail treatment projects, and the evaluation of drug courts. Dr. Arndt helped the design the projects and conducted their evaluation. He currently works with a SAMHSA funded Medication Assisted Treatment program at the University of Iowa Health Center.
Deborah Krauss is a small business owner and single mom, who has been in recovery from addiction to methamphetamine since 2005. A native of rural south central Iowa, she promotes positive community engagement by empowering people through humanitarian and environmental activism. Deborah spends her free time traveling, creating art, meditating, learning, and mentoring others.
