Minor Free Speech Victory At Iowa State University As Marijuana Bandana Exemption Granted For Religious Purposes To Student Attendee

A student in the horticulture program at Iowa State University tells WeedPress they have been granted a religious exemption in according with the University’s policy for religious exemptions and are now allowed to wear a bandana with marijuana leaves printed on it to their classes.

Other schools have taken issue with marijuana being printed on clothing. One nearby middle school had a Rastafarian student sue after being told to turn a marijuana leaf T-shirt inside out and win a $15,000 payout for the violation of his right to display religious paraphernalia on campus.

Below are redacted emails of the conversation. While maybe not the most exciting story to some, the Iowa State University House of Rastafari plans to issue a press release concerning this legal victory shortly.

Students at Iowa State University can thank Paul Gerlich and his crew for lubricating the way for future victories and standing up for free speech for students throughout the country. Paul. Eternal gratitude for these kids who paid dearly for their beliefs. Free speech, the first amendment, is the only one that stops us from heading to the second, and with today’s violent leftists advocating physical removal of people they disagree with, it’s critical that students continue educating others on why these victories are so important, for everyone, no matter their worldview, culture or religious backgrounds.

Subject: Reguest for religious accommodation

Good afternoon!

I acknowledge the rule stated in your syllabus about no hats in class. And I agree we should deal with this professionally. So based on the suggestion I reviewed online from the ISU policy for religious accommodations, I wanted to make a written request to wear a purple, blue, and green bandana as it is a part of my religious beliefs. Thank you for working with me to solve this issue. Have a grate day, stay nice and warm!

Peace and Love,

Howdy from the Frosty Greenhouse!  (literally, there is frost on the vents!!!)

Thanks for contacting me. I am going to forward this request to the Assistant Dean/Director of Student Assistance in the Office of Student Assistance (https://www.studentassistance.dso.iastate.edu/). I have never encountered one of these requests before, and I want to make sure it is processed appropriately and correctly. I will keep you posted on any developments, and you may want to keep your eyes out in case someone from the office contacts you to follow up for more details. Like I said, I am not sure how these work, but I will initiate the process with the appropriate officials.

You stay warm too!

Thanks,
