Here’s the comments so far from today’s Des Moines Register Facebook page:

“People are open-minded and they’re curious,” the Iowa lawmaker said.

  • Daniel Jay Spellman Joking aside, if medical research demonstrates an efficacious use for these substances under supervision of a qualified medical professional, science should not be sacrificed on the altar of taboo.

  • Dan Umthun I totally get why this is a GOP stance now. ‘Yeah drugs are rad, but what we also need as the GOP is to eliminate women’s access to reproductive healthcare, cut taxes for the rich, destroy collective bargaining and labor, dismantle public schools, allow the systemic prolapse of every single public institution… so yeah hallucinogens are the only remaining refuge from the hellscape we’re working on creating here at the statehouse.’

  • Christopher Nicholas Dan Umthun lol I love how wrong your comment is. The GOP doesn’t want to eliminate women’s access to reproductive healthcare :ie birth control they simply want you to pay for it yourself. The GOP wants to cut taxes for everyone, and has. Should I continue? I’m sorry facts dont support your claim

  • Amber L Gustafson So the GOP in Iowa is working to eliminate background checks on guns AND legalize drugs that cause auditory and visual hallucinations, impulsive behavior, paranoia, and agitation. Cool. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?

  • Amber L Gustafson Thanks, Tony for showing how mind-altering substances and guns do not mix. Alcohol, LSD, or pot + guns = disaster

  • Matthew Dake Amber L Gustafson Ledbetter had been drinking as well. Speaking as someone with extensive personal knowledge of psychedelics, this is absolutely NOT the norm.

  • Chris Costanzo Not true the federal government background check would still apply you just wouldn’t need to jump through hoops for a permit to carry.Americans should read the second amendment and be followed to the letter. The drug issue its a big business in this couSee more

  • Kerwin Dobbins Let’s work on getting cannabis decrim’d first.

  • Gage Kelly I personally love this. So many people can use this psychedelic for so many things. I personally have consumed large amounts of hallucinogens. Really eleviates my crippling anxiety n depression for short amounts of time after tripping. (I’m bipolar) schitzo runs in there but it all depends on the person. Half y’all couldnt face your demons w this drug.

  • Marrianna Collins Gage Kelly I’ve had similar experiences. For about a week after consumption of a few grams, I feel like everything is going to be alright, I don’t hate humanity, I like being around people; it’s astounding. Big Pharma can’t patent a plant. This is the only reason why it’s illegal.

  • Gage Kelly Marrianna Collins mushies are better for me in my opinion but if you trip too much you’ll mess up the cycle. Coming from experience, I agree I had simaliar effects. My depression went away for a month n a half after tripping

  • David Karayof Psychedelic drugs should be legal. I’m surprised there’s anything I can support coming from the right.

  • Marrianna Collins This man is very moderate. He just ran as a Rep to win. His biggest flaw to me was his pro-life stance.

  • Steve Choice Maybe Mr. Incense and Peppermints oughta hop on his magic carpet and ride on down to the library for some real info. This stuff has been making people do the zombie boog-a-loo since about the time The Beatles hit the stage with Ed Sullivan. We don’t need cops and firefighters out there, higher than a Woodstock hippie, trying to keep order, and we don’t need it in the rest of society, either. No thank you, sir.
  • Chris Costanzo If i want to own a machine gun cat i should be able too!..
  • Isa Rose This is seriously one of their priorities? Good. Lord.

  • Ryan Plew Don’t take the brown acid!
  • Tony Brown Those that aren’t aware, Ketamine, MDMA and Psilocybin have shown tremendous results in depression and PTSD patients.

This could be the treatment that stops vets from killing themselves, it’s just stupendously sad we live in an era where people have been poisoned by disinformation and scare tactics to where it’s hard for clinics to even study the benefits.

So far though, MDMA and Psilocybin treatments have show better results than any other treatment we currently have. We are talking 80% long term success rates here guys.

    Also insanely more safe.

  • Michelle Leah I got ketamine in the ER for severe pain. I was still in pain but damned if I wasn’t happy about it.
  • Amber L Gustafson I have no opposition to these drugs used under the supervision of a licensed medical professional in a clinical setting for the treatment of specific conditions. But just because a medication can help some people with specific conditions does not mean that it is safe for everyone to take. People with ADHD take amphetamine for the management for their symptoms but for people without ADHD amphetamines are dangerous and addictive and combined with access to firearms can be deadly.
  • Camilo Ave Rodriguez Amber L Gustafson people with adhd can also be addicted to amphetamines. Human bodies don’t change from one person to another because a doctor prescribed it. Stop living by the illusion that someone else’s authority is all you need to live
  • Tony Brown You literally can not die or suffer any serious side effects from a medicinal dose of Psilocybin.

Why don’t you have some actual evidence with your claims.

  • Mckee Matthew I rather them do that then smoke pot.
  • Dusty Taylor Well said Tony. Benefits of medicinal doses under medical supervision for ppl w/ PTSD & depression/anxiety in terminally ill patients has been astounding.

  • Christopher Nicholas I love all these left wing nuts coming out all anti drug lol. Lsd and shrooms actually do great things for headaches and depression. However because it’s coming from a Republican it must be evil.

  • Marrianna Collins Right? I thought democrats were against the war on drugs? What gives?
