From an Iowan advocate comes the latest and greatest form letter from Chuck Grassley, who met with us about our legal argument and said we have it figured out correctly in Iowa. Chuck really knows his stuff on how this stuff works, which is why letters, while helpful, don’t resolve legal controversies. If you actually get a chance to talk to Grassley, you’ll find he’s helpful on marijuana policy, but it’s hard for most advocates to get through to him in a meaningful way unless they first do years of homework to learn the law and case histories.

When you stop arguing or asking about science, or opinion, on this topic, you’ll find that law is the solution to your injury. Chuck was allowed to frame the narrative as if it is about danger. It’s not, and the question is irrelevant. I wouldn’t even respond to his points. It’s about the law, not dangers.
These are very serious injuries to be denied the freedom to experiment with your consciousness. Medical is a nice exemption, but the whole thing is unconstitutional. The courts have not thoroughly reviewed this without saying personal possession is a constitutional right. Chuck is wrong on case law. Don’t waste energy over a form letter that is meant to be a misunderstanding unless you want to.
Read case law on the WeedPress drop down tabs and then go to court if you want to argue injuries against your right to be free and left alone in your own home.
You can argue with politicians for decades or win cases like this one.
Legal rights trump science in a court of law. It’s worth it to read this case as well that is featured on NORML’s website: http://norml.org/pdf_files/brief_bank/Carl_Olsen_v_DEA.pdf
If you don’t have the energy to devote years to studying and reading the law, then you can still argue the law as public policy: the war on drugs has failed, and to regulate drugs and reduce societal cost we must decriminalize and legalize appropriately, and his past efforts are recognized as being counter productive. Again case closed.
Controlling narratives can be easy, if you know how to ignore and reframe a more focused discussion.
Getting ahold of politicians is not easy, and getting letters like this is always important. To take it to another level, follow WeedPress. And while you’re at it, check out these great activist training seminars from the Leadership Institute.
