Marijuana is an exit drug. Has Iowa’s unconscionable war on common sense marijuana policy contributed to Iowa’s meth epidemic?
The term “California sober” refers to drug addicts people who use drugs who, during drug treatment, use marijuana as an adjunct medicine to help curb physical cravings within their bodies and prevent relapse. In Iowa, according to the latest Office of Drug Control Policy presentation, there are two glaring statistics that when presented side by side explain why the legalization of marijuana as a medicine can lower out of control meth and heroin disorders amongst the people.
From this February 9th ODCP report comes the two following stats I’d like to highlight:
Meth seizures — totaled 227,164 grams in 2021, up 177% from 81,899 grams in 2016.
Source: 2021 Iowa Department of Public Safety, DCI Lab
Marijuana/THC
● Iowans’ past month use of marijuana ranks 3rd lowest in the U.S.
Here’s the statistics and the obvious conclusion from the best informed addiction experts — who are in it not to make a profit like the drug-testing, drug-counseling, predatory addiction industry but to actually save lives — in the country.
Putting these two stats together — admittedly somewhat out of context but not entirely out of context — I have the following question.
Hypothesis: would more marijuana use (legally through the medical marijuana program) lower Iowans use of methamphetamine, which has nearly tripled over the past five years going by the weight in seizures recorded as shown above in this article?
I’m curious as to how much of an impact the inevitable normalizing of marijuana use in replacement of harder deadly drugs would positively impact society on healthcare costs.
That being said I feel compelled here to clarify that I fully support the legalization of heroin and methamphetamine. Problematic drug use should be dealt with in forceful interventions such as those modeled successfully in Portugal. The United States criminalization approach has been a catastrophe of humanitarian proportions.
Any drug policy advocate that does not support such common regarding sense regarding their position on meth and heroin abuse either hasn’t done their homework or is completely full of shit and worried more about pleasing other people than standing up for what is morally and ethically mandated.
